چکیده

Computational studies have recently gained significant interest in engineering applications for the virtual monitoring of bone pathologies such as osteoporosis and fracture healing. Several authors have investigated numerically the role of quantitative ultrasound as a diagnostic and monitoring tool of the fracture healing process since ultrasonic techniques are non-invasive and non-ionizing means for bone assessment. During the last two decades, the development of powerful computers and simulation tools render the in silico investigation of complicated wave propagation phenomena easier and more attractive. Moreover, the availability of high-resolution images of the microstructure of bone derived from micro-computed tomography (μ-CT) and scanning acoustic microscopy (SAM) has opened new horizons for the development of more realistic computational models of healing and osteoporotic bones. The scope of this paper is to present our computational approaches on ultrasound wave propagation in intact and healing long bones and thus enhance the role of ultrasound as a monitoring means of the fracture healing process.

Ultrasonic Evaluation of Intact, Healing and Osteoporotic Long Bones

Quantitative ultrasound (QUS) has been introduced in recent years for the comprehensive noninvasive and non-ionizing evaluation of bones. This paper presents a review of our research work of the last decade including experimental and computational studies for the ultrasonic assessment of fracture healing and osteoporosis. The axial transmission and the backscattering methods have been applied t...

MPI- and CUDA- implementations of modal finite difference method for P-SV wave propagation modeling

Among different discretization approaches, Finite Difference Method (FDM) is widely used for acoustic and elastic full-wave form modeling. An inevitable deficit of the technique, however, is its sever requirement to computational resources. A promising solution is parallelization, where the problem is broken into several segments, and the calculations are distributed over different processors. ...

THE BEST DURATION OF LOW INTENSITY PULSED ULTRASOUND FOR ACCELERATING FRACTURED-RADIAL BONE REPAIR

We have already shown that low intensity pulsed ultrasonic treatment increases rabbit radial fracture healing. The present experiment was undertaken to find out the best duration for treatment. A complete transverse fracture was made in the right radial bones of21 adult male rabbits by a Stanley knife. The animals were divided into 4 groups: group 1, control groups 2, 3, and 4, experimental...
